Bimini Problems

Damaged Bimini Top

During our first Plymouth visit, we have noticed that starboard side bimini hinge was completely torn off from the GRP, probably waiting to be repaired. At this time, we have asked how this happened but unfortunately got no answer.
We repeated our question in the following days via email and received a dodgy answer as follows:

"I can also confirm that the factory have inspected the damage to the Bimini. They will not only be carrying out the repair, but they will be reinforcing the area so this does not happen again."

Then we have asked the question to a senior manager recently and got below answer:

"There was a fault with the original installation of the bimini whereby a backing plate was not fitted. This caused the fixings to pull out. These have been re-instated correctly and the full repair carried out. I understand the surveyor and ..... tested the bimini in Plymouth without comment prior to departure."

Obviously the bimini suffered a damaged due to X or Y reason and had to be fixed by the yard. They claimed that the port side hinge was going to be reinforced as well but we did not see any trace of repairs on the GRP in that area and sikaflex seal applied by the factory was intact on the port side whereas it was quite messy around the starboard hinge
Messy sealing job on starboard side bimini hinge proves that some repair, whether proper or not, has been performed

We have also noticed that the shackle securing the bimini to the hook was bent. It requires a tremendous amount of force to bend this fixture, which lead us to think that it could be another casulaty of the structural damage.

Bimini Top Sagging with Rain

An electrohydraulic bimini top has been fitted (an 23900 EUR option) to flybridge.
Pictures of the issue is quite self explanatory. When it rains, the bimini top is sagging from 3 sections. If not emptied, it may very well risk damaging the bimini structure.
Surprizing to see how this issue got overlooked in a country that rains 300 days a year!
We also could not help but wonder whether the previous damage (that nobody knew how it happened!) to the structure could be due to this sagging issue.
Status: Pending since 31May18
